Product Demonstrations or Product Sampling?

I received a call last week from a gentleman who is looking for “people to demonstrate his product” in grocery stores.

Let get our definitions straight first, I said.

Productions Plus trains and places great product demonstrators at the point-of-purchase. Our talent are educated, attractive and able to engage the customer—providing answers to questions and discussing product features and benefits. They’re especially good at demonstrating and explaining complex processes and products. That’s why you’ll see them in Williams-Sonoma working with $3,000 programmable fully automatic espresso makers, at auto shows talking gear ratios and drive trains for Porsche, and discussing audio sound quality in electronic stores.

So, I asked the caller, tell me about your product and what we can do to demonstrate it to the consumer.

Sheepishly, he told me that he was merely looking for retirees to hand out cheese samples at the local market, and didn’t want to pay more than minimum wage.

Whether we are talking about product demonstrations or ‘mere’ product sampling, it’s important to put the right person at the customer engagement. The product sampler is the face for the brand. Who best personifies the product being sold? (Would you buy investment advice from a guy driving a beat up 1972 Gremlin?)

Some things to think about when talking to an event staffing agency about the person you want representing your company:

Is the best person for the job a male or female?

What would be the best background, education, and experience for the product sampler?

Is there an age range, ethnicity or “look” that best promotes your product?

Finally, will the person be able to engage with the consumer? Selling a product is not only about spouting out the features and benefits. Having a conversation with the client to learn about his/her lifestyle and choices as they pertain to the product being sold is a must.

Whether you’re looking for a product demonstrator or a product sampler, the right person to represent your brand is key—and the difference between a good program and a great program.

For Productions Plus, it’s all about building brand awareness. With the right talent, the sales will follow.
